Samuel Westmoreland (1944-2022)

We regret to inform the campus community that Samuel Westmoreland (1944-2022) passed away on Oct. 24. Sam was a graduate of Kutztown University (then Kutztown State College), long-time professor in the university’s sociology program and a life-long and dedicated advocate for the university. He started at Kutztown University in 1962 as an undergraduate. He played football, basketball and track and graduated with a B.S. in Education in 1966. He went on to earn a M.Ed. from Kutztown University and a then a M.A. from Lehigh University. He started teaching with the sociology program at KU in 1971, and he taught here until his retirement in 2007. He always had a special interest in issues of diversity and was a strong advocate for the education and advancement of minorities. After retirement, he remained involved in many of our university’s activities. He is remembered as a kind, humorous and friendly colleague and mentor, dedicated to the university and important social causes. We are most grateful for his dedication and friendship. He will be missed. UNESCO World Philosophy Day Lecture

The Department of Philosophy and Government is pleased to announce that professor Randall L. Kennedy will deliver the 10th annual UNESCO World Philosophy Day Lecture, "Should I Love My Country? Patriotism and the African American.” The lecture will begin 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in Schaeffer Auditorium.
Professor Kennedy is the Michael R. Klein Professor at Harvard Law School and has served as a law clerk for Judge J. Skelly Wright of the United States Court of Appeals and for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. He has published extensively on race, law, and equality, including "Race, Crime, and the Law", which won the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award in 1998.

Sport Management Program Awarded Reaccreditation

With joy, the Department of Sport Management announces its achievement of a seven-year reaffirmation of accreditation from the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). Accreditation by COSMA is a stellar achievement and a statement of the program’s continuing commitment to quality and excellence in sport management education based on agreed-upon accreditation standards. KU’s Sport Management program was the first in eastern Pennsylvania to be granted accreditation by COSMA in 2015. The Department of Sport Management would like to extend our appreciation to the students, alumni, administration and support staff for all the support provided to help lead the process to success.
