THE SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

THIS MONTH IN KU HISTORY

(Historical facts have been compiled from the KU Archives and Special Collections of the Rohrbach Library; the archives of the Keystone; Kutztown Patriot, Allentown Leader and Reading Eagle; and Beacon on the Hill by Dr. Lee Graver.)

In September 1954, the first traffic signal is installed on Kutztown Road in front of Old Main to assist students in crossing the busy street.  Route 222 had undergone several expansions in the early 1950s in both Lancaster and Allentown increasing traffic on the road.  The Kutztown bypass was not built until 1971 so all traffic passed through the college until that time.
