KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Summer Talent Academy for Rising Stars (STARS) Program held its commencement ceremony for 25 students on Thursday, Aug. 9 in the McFarland Student Union. Fall acceptance letters were distributed to all 25 students who successfully completed the program. Dr. Andrea Kirshman, associate provost for retention and student services at Kutztown University, opened and closed the program. Other featured speakers from KU included Dr. Anne Zayaitz, provost; Dr. Warren Hilton, vice president, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs; and Dr. Jennifer Schlegel, associate professor of anthropology/sociology.

Family and friends of the students, along with KU faculty and staff, celebrated the students' accomplishments at the ceremony and the reception that followed.

STARS supports selected high school seniors seeking admissions to Kutztown University. The program is an on-campus five-week experience that provides two courses (six college-level credits), advising, academic support as well as social activities.

"Our STARS students learned essential skills both in and out of the classroom to be successful at KU this fall," Kirshman said. "They grew and learned so much about themselves in these five weeks. It was truly an amazing thing to see."

The program is intended to support students in transitioning to college. Dr. Schlegel and Dr. Keith Massie, assistant professor of communication studies, taught the two courses offered during STARS program.
