March 14, 2016

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Avalanche, Kutztown University's Golden Bear mascot, is set to defend his 2015 title of Mascot Madness Champion.  The 2016 competition begins Wednesday, March 16, at 9 a.m. when Avalanche takes on Skully, the parrot mascot of Millersville University. Votes will be collected for 24 hours.  Voters must have a Twitter account in order to participate.

TheMascot Madness Competition pits the 14 mascots from Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education against each other in one-on-one single elimination matches until a champion is named.  On March 23 the winner of the Kutztown/Millersville match goes up against the winner of the West Chester/Mansfield match.

Round three will take place March 30 and the championship on April 4.

In 2015, Avalanche won the inaugural competition, garnering wins over Bloomsburg, West Chester and Slippery Rock Universities.  More impressively 41,000 total votes were cast between the 14 schools throughout the competition, with Avalanche receiving 30 percent of all votes.  He was recognized by the State System Board of Governors in Harrisburg and again during a ceremony at KU in October.

Born on Blue Mountain in northern Berks County, Avalanche came to KU in October 2005.  He lives in the clock tower of Old Main and is a cheerology and bearobics majors.  He is named in honor of the nickname of then Kutztown State College's sports teams from the mid-1930s to the early 1960s. In 1961, Golden Bears replaced Golden Avalanche as the nickname for Kutztown's sports teams, and Golden Bear mascots soon followed. Most recently, Goldie and Griz served as KU's Golden Bear mascots. With their "graduation," however, a new mascot was sought.
