Mumbauer Named KU Employee of the Month for December 2019

President Hawkinson and Joseph Mumbauer

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Congratulations to Joseph Mumbauer, senior systems analyst in Information Technology, on being named KU Employee of the Month for December 2019.

Mumbauer had two nominations. The first from Daniel Haney, admissions, reads:

"Over the past several months, Kutztown University has been working with an outside vendor to overhaul our scholarship-awarding process for incoming applicants. The process is beginning the 'deliverables' stage and we would have never made it to this point without the work of Joseph Mumbauer.

Joe was tasked with writing the entire program to extract more than 350 data fields and then create a program to calculate an applicant's merit- and need-based aid. He completed this and did so with the utmost professionalism; Joe was always prompt, communicative and meticulous. He never took the path of least resistance and frequently had to put in additional time to adjust for a change or a program enhancement.

Throughout the past year, working with Joe has been a pleasure. He's the type of employee all KU staff should strive toward; although he is quiet and humble, Joe takes pride in his work. He is always patient and willing to train others on what he is doing and is eager to share his decade-worth of KU institutional knowledge. His work happens behind the scenes, but that doesn't diminish the significance. Joe makes KU a better place for faculty, staff and students every single day."

Mumbauer's second nomination from Anthony Rehrig, information technology, reads:

"Joe's been a vital part of KU for quite a long time. He started here as an undergraduate student, continued on as a graduate student and worked as a graduate assistant. He joined KU as a staff member under dire circumstances - his friend and mentor, Cal, a KU systems analyst, passed away unexpectedly and Joe carried on his work on the Online Student Services system.

A project for one of his graduate classes eventually became an extension of KU's mainframe system - Profs Online - that was used by many departments on campus (academic departments, Connections, Housing, etc.). He was a lead developer in converting from our old mainframe system to our MyKU system. He continues to enhance MyKU and help it integrate with other campus systems.

He provides sound judgment and guidance in whatever meeting or project he's a part of. He's developed a wealth of business-process knowledge along the way as well, which helps inform his IT design decisions and helps get newer employees up to speed on how the university has functioned over the years. He always has the best interests of the campus community at hear, and it's served all of us well.

I think if you ask most departments about Joe, he's helped them and positively impacted their work in some way. He's been at this more than 15 years as a KU employee (longer if you add in his time as a graduate assistant) and he keeps getting better with age. He's a wonderful colleague and friend."

Nominations are collected from students, faculty and staff, and the Employee of the Month is selected by the Human Resources Advisory Council. A winner will be selected each month, and out of the 12 monthly winners one will be selected as Employee of the Year. The Employee of the Month will receive a plaque, reserved parking and a $100 monetary gift sponsored by President Hawkinson.
