Peterson Named Employee of the Month for October

Congratulations to Barry Peterson, College of Visual and Performing Arts, on being named KU Employee of the Month for October 2017.

Barry's nomination from Mike Regensburger, campus radio manager, reads like this:   "One such person without a doubt is Barry Peterson. I'm not sure if I've ever had the opportunity to tell this to his face, but I consider Barry one of the most important and helpful people I work with on a daily basis. Something many people do not realize is that the existence of the radio station's technical side lies on Barry's shoulders. Barry is our engineer of sorts who fixes components that break down which help keep our radio station on-air and has answered countless late night and weekend calls and text messages from me asking if he could come in and fix something or get the station back on-the-air after a storm.

I live about a half hour north of here in the mountains and I cannot tell you how many thunderstorms, snowstorms, etc. that I've been stranded, but I get on the phone with Barry and just like the postal carriers, rain, snow, sleet, hail, flood, blizzard, landslides, monsoons, you name it, Barry is there, helping get the station running again and providing a vital community service.

Barry helped scope and build the radio station back 15 years ago and Barry is always quick to respond to requests for parts and wires I need when I need them, 24 hours a day.

And the radio station is just one of a million technical things Barry takes care of across campus. If he's not hanging cables somewhere, or setting up a KU-TV broadcast, or fixing the TV distribution unit, he's in his workshop fixing electronic components like only Barry can do.

I consider Barry not only a colleague but a friend and one of those employees who works "behind-the-scenes" so that people hardly know he's here, but go one or two days without Barry, and the whole foundation begins to crumble. If I feel that way about him just from the radio station perspective, imagine how valuable he is to all the other components on campus who require his daily technical expertise.

Barry deserves employee of the month without a doubt and I thank him for always being there for me, for the radio station, and to everyone else on campus.

Barry is a living technological legend..."

Nominations are collected from students, faculty and staff, and the Employee of the Month is selected by the Human Resources Advisory Council.  A winner will be selected each month and out of the 12 monthly winners one will be selected as Employee of the Year.  The Employee of the Month will receive a plaque, reserved parking and a $100 monetary gift sponsored by President Hawkinson.   For more information on the award or to nominate someone, visit
