Ginras to Hold Clarinet Master Classes at KU

October 7, 2015

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Dr. Michele Gingras, distinguished professor of music at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, will present a master class to KU clarinet students at 5 p.m.  She will also present a Klezmer master class, open to the entire Kutztown music community, at 7:30 p.m., both located in the Georgian room.

Klezmer is a traditional folk music associated with Yiddish speaking Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Dr. Gingras will show how to play in Klezmer style and then have the students join her in playing. The Klezmer master class is open to all instruments and students interested in attending are encouraged to bring their own instruments. No prior Klezmer experience is needed for this class.

Dr. Gingras is an active recitalist, author, and recording artist. She has performed as a Klezmer musician all over the world and has recorded over a dozen CDs. She has published over 250 articles and reviews for numerous publications as well as written two books of her own, Clarinet Secrets-52 Performance Strategies for the Advanced Clarinetist and More Clarinet Secrets-100 Quick Tips for the Advanced Clarinetist.

Funding for this event comes from a Kutztown University Sesquicentennial grant.
