Earth Day Tree Planting Event

As they have for the past 12 years, in recognition of Earth Day, students in two labs for the Environmental Biology class participated in a collaborative effort with the Kutztown Borough Environmental Council (EAC) to remove invasive shrubs and plant 60 native trees and shrubs along the Saucony Creek at Kutztown Borough North Park. Tree purchases were funded by a matching grant to the Kutztown Borough EAC. Dr. Todd Underwood, professor of biology and chair of the Kutztown Borough Environmental Advisory Commission, applied for this grant to support habitat restoration along the Saucony Trail. Underwood is a leader in building strong ties between the university and the Borough. Ms. Cheyenne Friscia, a biology major and KU Student Representative to the Borough EAC, helped to lead the tree-planting event. Nearly 40 Kutztown University students participated over two days in this class-based service, learning tree and shrub-planting activity. All the trees and shrubs that were planted are native to Pennsylvania and were added to reinforce the importance of the Saucony Trail as a home and habitat for wildlife.

TRIO Student Support Services Program Networking Event

Thank you to the KU faculty and staff, KU Foundation professionals and off-campus professionals and TRIO SSSP alumni who participated and continued to support the TRIO SSSP Networking Event. This year we would like to also thank Amy Cozze, outreach director for U.S. Senator Bob Casey, for her time and support of the TRIO grants. The support of our representatives allows the TRIO grant programs to continue to be funded, like KU’s TRIO Student Support Services Program and TRIO Upward Bound program. TRIO SSSP is proud to be providing services for students at KU for 30 years. This year, 10 students were awarded for their exceptional efforts in their academics and participation in the program. Business Boulevard created another facet of networking, allowing students to showcase their businesses and talents. Headshots were provided to students by Carter McKinney of McKinney Media LLC.
