  • Biography
    Joanne Cohen Ph.D., LMFT, NCC (she/her) has a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. She is a professor and coordinator of the M.A. Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling program at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Cohen has held residencies in trauma therapy at the Children’s Alliance Center in Reading, PA, and at Alianzas de Phoenixville in PA. She is a PA licensed Psychologist, a National Certified Counselor, and a PA licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Her expertise includes individual and family trauma, abuse, and addiction, and the client- and person-centered approach. Dr. Cohen has hosted over a dozen regional, national, and international conferences on the person-centered approach, attending and presenting at many more. She has held several positions on the editorial board of the Person-Centered Journal and Renaissance Newsletter and received the Association for the Development of the Person-Centered Approach distinguished service award in 2011. In 2019, after completing research on elder financial abuse and serving as an Ombudsperson with the Lehigh County Office of Aging, Dr. Cohen received a distinguished service award from the Association for Adult Development and Aging. Dr. Cohen served on the Journal of Counseling and Development editorial review board. She has authored nearly 20 articles and book chapters and has delivered nearly 100 professional presentations at state, regional, national, and international conferences. Her research and professional development grants total nearly $40,000. Her research includes mixed-methods studies of 100 + participants on the topics of Client evaluation of counselors; Acculturation of international students to the U.S.; Demographic and MBTI type predictors of marital quality; Demographic and MBTI type predictors of mate selection and marital quality among Black-white married couples; and Perspectives of children and adolescents growing up in the sandwich generation.
