Academic Warning, Probation, and Dismissal of Undergraduate Students

Kutztown University Policy ACA-042

  1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to define the standards for good academic standing, academic warning, academic probation, and dismissal of undergraduate students for poor academic performance.

  2. Scope

This policy applies to all undergraduate students.

  3. Key words and phrases:

CGPA – stands for cumulative grade point average. Good Academic Standing - maintaining a minimum CGPA of 2.00 or higher for all work taken at Kutztown University.

Warning, Probation, and Dismissal – actions taken by Kutztown University when a student’s CGPA is below good academic standing at the end of the fall or spring term. The University will notify, in writing, each student who is on warning, is on probation, or is dismissed for academic reasons. Academic warning, probation, and dismissal take effect immediately at the end of the fall or spring term.

No student will go on academic warning or probation, or be dismissed from the University for academic reasons, at the end of the summer or winter session. However, a student’s grades in a summer or winter session may prevent academic warning, academic probation, or dismissal rendered at the end of the previous fall or spring semester from taking effect.

    • READMISSION OF DISMISSED STUDENTS

A student dismissed from the University must petition the Academic Exceptions Committee (AEC) for an additional semester of academic probation prior to readmission.

Students readmitted to the University will have a maximum of two semesters to reach a CGPA of 2.00.  During that time, the student must maintain a CGPA of at least 2.0 for each semester of work following readmission.  Failure to maintain a CGPA of 2.0 for each semester until the CGPA reaches 2.00 or higher will result in a second dismissal.

Any student who is dismissed from the University for failure to maintain a CGPA of 2.0 a second time is not eligible for future readmission.  Readmitted students who qualify may consider applying for Academic Forgiveness (see ACA-055).
