PRIDE Program (Promoting Responsibility In Damage Elimination)

Kutztown University Policy FP-012

  1. Purpose

PRIDE is an effort to encourage students to take responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of their environment. This program was initiated in an effort to reduce damages within the halls, while providing leadership opportunities in the development of special room projects and specialty items.

  2. Scope

The PRIDE program goal is to develop within students, the awareness of planning and developing special hall projects which will immediately impact on the present environment of their residence hall and improve the quality of the environment for future students. By utilizing individual students, hall council and Housing and Residential Services staff, goals can be established and completed within a residence hall during an academic year.

  4. Policy and Procedure(s)

At the beginning of each semester, $8.00 is taken from the housing fee paid by each residence hall student. The $8.00 is placed in a special escrow account per residence hall.

Allocations are based upon occupancy. For example, if Bonner Hall has 180 occupants for the Fall (or Spring) semester, the allocation would be $8.00 x 180.

The $8.00 fee is set aside each semester for the PRIDE program.  This is not a security deposit.

Residence Halls are inspected twice each semester for common area damages.  Common area damage inspections are as follows:

    *Fall Semester Mid October
    *Early December
    *Spring Semester/Late February
    *Early April

The amount of money incurred in common area damages (submitted and totaled by the Residence Coordinators) is deducted from the PRIDE allocation per residence hall.

The remaining amount is used by Hall Councils to develop special projects in the residence halls. The money allocated to each hall is handled as a separate account and cannot be used to cover damages or special projects in other halls.

The allocation per semester is not always completely spent. In this instance, the amount "rolls over" into the next semester or next academic year.

Housing and Residential Services staff advisors (Residence Coordinators and Hall Directors) and Hall Councils (students) submit Brainstorm Lists and Final Project Proposals to the Housing and Residential Services Office during the semester.

The Housing and Residential Services staff reviews and comments on the feasibility of the projects and meets with staff and student project coordinators in order to develop projects.

The acquisitions and projects are initiated each semester and are planned and achieved by students.
