John P. Schellenberg Award

2027 Call for Nominations

Deadline for application submission: Friday, April 16, 2027 at 4:30 pm. 

Purpose: This award was established by John P. Schellenberg, Professor Emeritus of Physical Sciences, faculty, alumni, and friends to recognize an early career faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding work within the mission of the Center for Engaged Learning (formerly called the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching).

Eligibility: To be eligible for the award, an individual must have been on the faculty full-time at least three (3) but not more than seven (7) years.

The recipient will be chosen based on the following three areas:

1. Pedagogy and Curriculum Innovation
2. Learning Technology Innovation
3. Assessment and/or Research on Learning

Current Award: $1,250.00 check and an engraved plaque.

Please submit a nomination letter and curriculum vitae to Douglas Scott at dscott@kutztown.edu  by Friday, April 16, 2027 at 4:30 pm.

Nominated candidates are also required to submit their own letter (maximum of two pages) that clearly outlines their qualifications in all three categories mentioned above. This letter should likewise be sent to dscott@kutztown.edu.

About John P. Schellenberg

Professor John P. Schellenberg (Jack) started his career as a high school Chemistry and Physics teacher (1962) in Norristown, PA. In Fall 1966 he was appointed as an Assistant Professor to the Physical Science Department at Kutztown State College. He enjoyed 37 years at Kutztown serving as a teaching professor and several release time appointments. During his tenure he was well known for his organizational skills and leadership positions. He had several positions as the first to hold that title: 1972 Director of New Student Programs (ENTRA); 1990 University Senate President; and 1994 Director of The Center for Enhancement of Teaching (CET). He served as Physical Sciences Department Chair from 1990 until 1994. He was twice, 1980 (State System) and 1995 (KU Alumni) recognized as “Teacher of the Year”. Upon retirement from Kutztown University in May 2003 and designated Distinguished Professor Emeritus, he continued teaching for twelve more years as an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Lehigh Carbon Community College. He served as President of APSCURF (retired faculty from 2004 until 2016). Each year since his retirement from KU, an early career teaching award is presented in his name. 

Outside of his educational interests he was involved in athletics and travel. He was a PIAA Basketball Official from 1966 to 1986. From 1973 until 1989 he assisted as KU Football and Basketball scoreboard operator and/or announcer. During his years at Kutztown, he had four Visiting Professor assignments: England, China, Russia and Kenya. Upon his retirement he continued his interests in travel. In the past 35 years he has made more than 50 international trips visiting all continents but Antarctica and more than 10 visits to USA National Parks. For several years Jack served as Senior Group Leader for Arawjo Tours LLC.
