CET Pedagogical Development Grant 2021-2022

PURPOSE: The grant’s purpose is to encourage faculty to develop, implement and assess a significantly different approach in their teaching that focuses on improving student learning and instructor effectiveness for the Spring 2022 semester.  Transitioning an existing course to a fully online or hybrid model, by itself, is not consistent with the goals of the grant. However, projects that clearly articulate how the transition to online/hybrid format results in a significantly different pedagogical approach would be appropriate.

While exploration is encouraged, it is also expected that a significant product will result from these projects, such as a newly configured course, significant course revision, or equivalent impact on teaching and student learning. Preference will be given to proposals that have a well-developed plan for assessing the outcomes of the new approach.

AWARD:  Funded projects will be allotted up to $1,500 (including benefits) to cover faculty’s stipend for time spent developing new course pedagogy. The funds may also be used to purchase equipment for pedagogical purposes (equipment purchased before the award notification may not be reimbursed).

ELIGIBILITY: The program is open to tenure-track and tenured faculty members. A faculty member cannot be awarded more than one KU CET grant during the 2021-2022 academic year. 

EXPECTATIONS: Grant recipients are expected to devote the specified amount of work on their projects during the winter 2022. If awarded, a preliminary presentation of your project is expected at a CET session in Spring 2022. After the grant period, we will also ask you to participate in a CET session to allow grant recipients to share their work with the campus community. Furthermore, a brief written report of your project needs to be submitted to the CET within 30 days after completion of project. Please notify the CET immediately of any changes that may prevent you from completing the proposed project.

Proposals are due by 11:59 pm on Monday, November 15, 2021. The project narrative and the letter of support must be formatted as one PDF file and emailed from the faculty member’s KU email address to the email address including the following in the subject line of your email: “Last name / CET Grant Application.” Please refer to specific guidelines below and direct questions to the CET at

PROJECT NARRATIVE (3-page limit, 12-point font, single-spaced) 

  • Provide a description of the project you plan to undertake. Describe the issue(s) in your teaching or course that have been a challenge and the changes you would like to make to improve student learning. Indicate how your plans represent a significantly different approach from pedagogies you more commonly employ and how the work associated with this project is beyond typical course development expected of faculty (including switching modality). Explain how you plan to assess the impact of your project on student learning. Proposals with clear and thoughtful assessment plans will be prioritized. Include the number of students who could potentially be impacted and describe what a successful improvement to this aspect of the course would mean for students both in this course and in their further studies.
  • Outline your proposed timeline.
  • Amount of budget requested and how it is to be used.

LETTER OF SUPPORT (one-page limit)

A one-page letter of support from your department chair or program director including a brief statement discussing the significance of the proposed project.

PROPOSAL EVALUATIONS:  In evaluating grant proposals, the CET places the highest priority on the quality and merit of the proposals submitted. Incomplete grants and those submitted after the deadline may not be considered. The evaluation committee consists of members of the CET Advisory Board. 

Submissions will be evaluated according to this list of criteria:

  • Articulated specific questions to ask about his/her teaching and/or goals to accomplish.
  • Justified that this is a pedagogical approach that is significantly different from how the faculty member has taught the course(s) before.
  • Demonstrated potential for project to have positive effect on student learning.
  • Identified a strategy (or strategies) for evaluating the impact of the pedagogical change on student learning.
  • Justified feasibility of the project in the given timeframe, including in light of other professional commitments.
