Master of Education in Secondary Education with Initial Certification

The Master of Education in Secondary Education with Initial Certification is a hybrid, social justice-oriented teacher preparation program. The program is designed for individuals with undergraduate degrees, interested in becoming teachers of diverse student populations in U.S. urban public schools. The Initial Certification in Secondary Education program is guided by and employs the Danielson Framework for Teaching. This framework includes:

  • Planning & Preparation- Demonstrating knowledge of content & pedagogy
  • Classroom Environment – Demonstrating knowledge of students
  • Instruction – Designing curriculum and planning instruction
  • Professional Responsibilities – Reflection on teaching, maintaining records, communicating with families, participating in professional communities, growing & showing professionalism

M.ED Initial Certification in Secondary Education Snapshot

Earn teaching certification

  • Biology, General Science, Earth & Space Science, Chemistry & Physics
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish or German
Cohort Model
  • Begins in fall of each academic year
  • Progress through program as one group
Instructional Design
  • 36 total credits
    • 16 months including winter & summer courses

Hybrid Model 

  • Face-to-Face: 15 credit hours
  • Online: 15 credit hours
  • Student Teaching: 6 credit hours
Student teaching Final semester in full-time placement in an urban secondary school within Reading or Allentown School Districts

Fall 2020 Admissions Requirements

  • Official transcripts for all previous colleges or universities
  • Clearances
    • Act 34, Act 126, Act 151 & TB test
  • Demonstrate evidence of content area knowledge:
    • undergraduate/graduate content area courses
    • passing Praxis II score; and/or
    • professional work experience
  • Participate in Zoom interview

Fall 2020 Admissions Timeline

  • Submit application by June 30th Click here for application
