Employer FAQ: Hosting Kutztown University Interns
Thinking about hosting a KU intern?
This FAQ is designed to help employers understand the process of partnering with Kutztown University to offer internship and field experience opportunities. From timelines and agreements to supervision and evaluation, here’s everything you need to know to get started.
-
How long does it take to establish an internship agreement?
If your organization accepts KU’s standard PASSHE-approved internship agreement, setup can be completed in 1–2 weeks.
If legal review or revisions are needed, it may take up to 8–12 weeks. We recommend starting at least three months before your intended start date to ensure a smooth process.
-
Is there a cost to host a KU intern?
There is no cost to establish a partnership. Employers may offer paid or unpaid internships depending on organizational policies and labor law compliance. All positions must adhere to U.S. Department of Labor guidelines for internships.
-
Do interns receive academic credit?
Many KU students complete internships for academic credit. When an internship is for credit:
· Students register for an internship course through their department.
· A KU faculty supervisor oversees the academic portion.
· The employer provides structured supervision and feedback.
Some students also complete non-credit internships purely for experience or professional development
-
Can internships be remote or hybrid?
Yes. KU supports remote, hybrid, and on-site experiences as long as:
· The work is meaningful and educationally relevant.
· Students receive professional supervision and mentoring
-
Who supervises the intern?
Each host designates a site supervisor who oversees day-to-day work, ensures learning objectives are met, and provides performance feedback.
The student’s faculty supervisor maintains contact with both the student and the site to support learning outcomes.
If your organization offers learning opportunities aligned with these areas, you can host a KU intern.
-
What kinds of internships does KU support?
Kutztown University supports internships in all academic areas, including:
· Business, marketing, and communication
· Education and human services
· Visual and performing arts
· STEM, computer science, and technology
· Social sciences and public policy
If your organization offers learning opportunities aligned with these areas, you can host a KU intern.
-
What if my organization already has an agreement with another PASSHE university?
Kutztown University follows the PASSHE system’s approved internship agreement. If your organization already has an agreement with another PASSHE institution, KU can often recognize or adapt that document for use—reducing time and duplication.
-
What documentation is required?
Employers complete and sign the Internship/Field Experience Agreement electronically through DocuSign.
Students must also submit an Internship/Field Experience Site Approval Form, which lists your organization’s details, supervisor, and duties.
-
How are interns evaluated?
At the end of the experience, site supervisors may be asked to complete a student evaluation form or provide written feedback. This helps KU assess learning outcomes and maintain program quality.
