Partner with Kutztown University: Host an Intern
-
Why Partner with KU?
Hosting a KU intern means joining a community committed to excellence in experiential learning. Our students bring strong academic preparation, professionalism, and a commitment to service.
Benefits for employers:
- Build a pipeline of talented future employees.
- Strengthen your organization’s capacity and innovation.
- Contribute to regional and statewide workforce development.
- Partner with KU faculty and departments aligned with your field.
How to Establish an Internship Partnership
Before a student can begin an internship or field experience, Kutztown University must have a formal internship agreement in place with the host organization. This agreement outlines expectations, supervision, and liability to ensure a high-quality experience for everyone involved.
-
Step 1: Contact the University
Organizations interested in hosting interns should reach out to:
Dr. Carl J. Sheperis | Vice Provost & Dean of Graduate Studies |📧 sheperis@kutztown.edu
Dr. Sheperis will guide you through the site approval and agreement process.
-
Step 2: Review and Sign the Agreement
KU uses a PASSHE-approved internship/field experience agreement template that establishes clear roles and expectations.
If your organization agrees to the standard terms:
- You will receive the agreement electronically via DocuSign for signature.
- Once signed, the site is added to the university’s approved list of internship locations.
If your organization requires revisions:
- KU’s legal and administrative offices will review your requested changes.
- Both parties will collaborate to finalize terms.
- The finalized agreement will then be executed via DocuSign.
💡 Tip: If your organization has hosted interns with other PASSHE universities, the existing agreement may already meet KU’s requirements.
-
Step 3: Site Approval and Student Placement
After the agreement is finalized:
- The site becomes eligible for student internships or field experiences.
- Students will complete the Internship/Field Experience Site Approval Form through their department.
- Departments confirm that the site has an active agreement with the Vice Provost’s Office before approving placement.
- Students may begin their internship only after all approvals are complete.
-
Timeline and Planning
Because new agreements require legal and administrative review, we recommend starting the process at least three months before the intended internship start date. Early preparation ensures that everything is in place for a smooth onboarding process.
-
Employer Responsibilities
Approved internship hosts agree to:
- Provide a meaningful, educationally relevant experience aligned with the student’s major.
- Designate a qualified site supervisor to oversee the student’s work and provide feedback.
- Maintain a safe and inclusive work environment consistent with KU’s educational values.
Communicate as needed with the student’s faculty supervisor or academic department.
-
After Approval
Once approved, your organization will be listed on KU’s Master Internship Site Directory, adding your organization to the list of approved sites.
The Vice Provost’s Office can assist you with:
- Renewing or updating existing agreements.
The Career Development Center can assist you with:
- Expanding internship offerings to additional disciplines.
- Promoting internship opportunities to KU students and related faculty. You will be requested to post current available opportunities to career portal (Handshake) for students to view. In addition, your organization may want to consider attending a career fair, hosting an information table on campus, and/or presenting in classrooms or student club meetings.
