QUEER DISABILITY JUSTICE

This training combines approaches for queer and disabled liberation, examining the shared roots of oppression in ableism and homophobia/transphobia and helping participants develop their tool boxes for unworking these systems in their lives and organizations.

Robin Gow (any pronouns) is a Lambda Literary Award–winning poet and community educator. He is the author of poetry collections and young adult and middle-grade novels, including Dear Mothman and A Million Quiet Revolutions, earning starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, School Library Journal, and more. Gow lives with his partner and their menagerie of animals on un-ceded Lenape land, also called the Lehigh Valley. They are a founding organizer for Queer & Trans Lehigh Valley and are passionate about mutual aid. He also serves on the Governor's Commission for People with Disabilities. DI FRAA WAERT DI HOSSE (THE WOMAN WEARS THE PANTS):  SABINA MUMBAUER AS PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH QUEER ICON

Sabina Mumbauer, female protagonist of the celebrated Pennsylvania Dutch-language radio show Asseba & Sabina, was portrayed by prolific playwright, artist, and KU graduate  (KSC '41) Paul Wieand from 1944-1954. Through humor and creative gender expression, Sabina challenged American gender roles while simultaneously embodying culturally-specific values of feminine empowerment in the Pennsylvania Dutch community. Her popularity, despite a sudden disappearance from public discourse after Paul's arrest in 1954 during the Lavender Scare, lives on in the memory of local people throughout the region who remember when Sabina's voice was heard on the radio every Sunday afternoon in the Pennsylvania Dutch country.

Patrick Donmoyer is Director of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, a folklife museum and research center on the Kutztown Campus.  As an author, artist, museum professional, and speaker of Pennsylvania Dutch, Patrick's research of Pennsylvania folk-cultural traditions intersects areas of art, ritual, architecture, healing, and gender. In 2022, Patrick received the American Folklore Society’s Archie Green Public Folklore Advocacy Award for significant contributions impacting folk traditions and their communities in the United States.

THE NEED FOR SEXUAL HEALTH LITERACY

 This presentation hopes to bridge the gap between abstinence only sexual education and comprehensive sexual education. It will address who is affected by the lack of accurate, accessible information and how it can impact our community at large.

Rowan Lilly is a senior social work major at Kutztown University. They are an intern for Boxwood's LGBTQ+ Resource Center. His stance on gender and sexuality is informed by the NASW's standards of inclusion and protection of the LGBTQ+ community against intolerance.

50 STATES OF TRANS VOICES:  WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ACTUALLY LISTEN?

This interactive session explores 50 States of Trans Voices, a national storytelling project created to center the diverse lived experiences of transgender people across the country. Through stories, emerging themes, and guided reflection, participants will examine what we can learn when we move beyond headlines and assumptions and intentionally listen to trans people as whole, complex human beings.

This roundtable will create a space for professors teaching WGS courses to discuss the role of the personal and political in our classrooms and as WGS professors.

Facilitated by: Dr. Colleen L. Clemens, (She/Her),  Director WGS and Professor of English

 Colleen Clemens has been teaching for 30 years and is now professor of Non-Western Literatures and Director of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.  Her work has appeared in magazines, academic journals. teaching manuals, anthologies, and creative spaces. She also published an open educational resource through the PA-Adopt grant, Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies. Her new memoir, E=mc²: A Story of Infertility, Miscarriage, and Love ,defies the one-dimensional view of fertility medicine as a sterile, clinical process by sharing her often vulnerable journey as she became a mother.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER :  AC DUMLAO (They/Them/Theirs)

 AC Dumlao, is a transgender non-binary first-generation Filipinx-American activist and educator, and creator of the Facebook page “Call Me They.” AC was honored as a Grand Marshal in the 2024 NYC Pride March, named an “emerging voice” by NBC Asian America for their inaugural Redefine A to Z series, has been featured in Mashable’s “30 Days of Pride: The LGBTQ figures making history right now,” and has been named as a NPR "Source of the Week."

With “Call Me They,” they began their work of educating on the issues of non-binary visibility, Asian and Filipino representation, “genderfull” fashion and aesthetics, and much more, all through an intersectional lens. Their professional expertise is in working with companies' HR and D&I departments and LGBTQ+ ERGs and BRGs to advise on trans and non-binary inclusive policies, such as best practices on sharing gender pronouns in the workplace. They have been seen presenting at national LGBTQ+ conferences including The LGBTQ+ Bar’s Lavender Law, the National LGBTQ Task Force’s Creating Change, and the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference.

 Highlights of their media work include co-hosting an advance screening/live talkback with Lisa Ling for the CNN Original Series’ episode This is Life with Lisa Ling: Gender Fluidity and appearing on ABC News Live. AC’s activist work and words have been featured in publications including The Huffington Post, VICE Media, Allure Magazine, Business Insider, Autostraddle, Mic.com, and The Advocate and they have received honors from Parity and the New York State Comptroller.

Additionally, AC is passionate about providing representation to queer and trans young people of color and has given keynotes at high schools and colleges across the country. An alum of Vassar College, AC serves as co-chair of Vassar’s LGBTQ+ alums group and Board Director for Vassar’s Alumnae/i Association. AC lives and works with gratitude on the traditional and unceded homelands of the Lenape Canarsie people with their wife, Caitlin.

Things she likes to of outside of work is reading, writing stories, drawing, and performing whenever she gets a chance, which shines through during the Annual Drag Show at Kutztown University.

THE GROWING ISSUE OF BEING MISGENDERED & HOW TO FIX IT TOGETHER

In this session, I'll be speaking on how important it is to not misgender people - even unintentionally. We'll go over what it is, how it has made students (including myself) feel right here on campus, and what we can do to make sure we aren't misgendering people. If you're interested in learning more about how you can be a better ally to others in the LGBTQIA++ community, please consider attending this session! Judgement free zone.
