As a forward-thinking addition to any teacher certification major, Kutztown University’s English as a Second Language (ESL) minor helps future teachers set themselves up for sucess while building the skills to support English Learners in inclusive, engaging, and language-responsive classrooms.
Students who complete the minor are eligible to pursue English as a Second Language PK-12 Program Specialist Certification after earning initial teaching certification.

ESL PK-12 Program Specialist Certification is Pennsylvania’s credential for educators who want to provide specialized support and instruction for English Learners in PK-12 schools.
Educators with ESL certification support students in developing English proficiency, accessing academic content, and succeeding in school through assessment, instructional support, and collaboration with families and colleagues.
Yes. You must be enrolled in a teacher certification education major in order to complete this program and earn ESL Program Specialist Certification. All grade level and subject areas certification programs are eligible, including:
— PK-12 Art — 7-12 Secondary Ed
— PK-4 Elementary — PK-12 Special Ed
— PK-12 Library Science — PK-12 Visual Impairment
— PK-12 Music
