New Mil-Vet Director
Nicholas Snyder
Director, Military and Veterans Services
It is my honor to complete my first semester with KU, to serve our outstanding Mil-Vet community, and to step into the shoes of my trailblazing predecessor, Ms. Tania Brown. Ms. T served as our founding director. She led the formation of many of our programs and initiatives while continuing her own military service. Her contributions cannot be understated. We will continue to honor her selfless service and vital work as she transitions to a new chapter in her life and career.
Now, allow me to share a little about myself, my team and a little about my vision for our Military & Veteran Services Center for 2025-2026 and beyond.
As the son of a Vietnam-era Army veteran, I enlisted in the Army about a year after high school as a human/counterintelligence agent. I was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division. My unit deployed to Iraq from late 2007 to early 2009. After deployment, I transitioned to the Army Reserves for two years while I started my academic journey at Eastern University--a prominent Christian private university in the Philadelphia area--where I earned a BA in Youth Ministry. I was part of the first “cohort” of veterans who used the Post-9/11 GI Bill. My wife and I interned with local churches, leading their children and youth ministries. I worked several part-time jobs supporting my young and growing family while working on my degree. Upon graduation, I started working at EU in graduate admissions. I continued to work at EU for nearly 10 years. During that time, I earned my MBA and became EU’s first Director of Military Recruitment. In 2022, I transitioned to West Chester University’s graduate admissions team where I led several efforts around military recruitment and marketing while supporting WCU’s MBA and Human Resource Management programs. Stepping into this position at KU allows me to leverage relationships, knowledge and skills developed over 12+ years in higher education and other industries.
This semester I have enjoyed getting to know my Vet Center staff, Yvonne Albright, who helps manage our office and operations. Rachel Smith, our Graduate Assistant, fulfills many vital operational tasks. Yvonne and Rachel are some of the hardest-working, most empathic, and talented people I have ever worked with. I am constantly impressed by their diligent service to our military-connected students. They have made my transition very smooth. We helped kick off the Ujima Conference with our Multicultural Center in February, with an outstanding speaker, Navy veteran, and healthcare leader, Mrs. Ely-Dyson. In the coming weeks, our Student Veterans Association club and our office will host a 5K that will raise funds for our Student Veteran Emergency Fund, which is an emergency scholarship for Veteran students. We will also be celebrating our graduating military-connected seniors with a BBQ event next month.
Our vision for KU’s M&VS is a thriving community that holistically supports all military-connected KU students in their personal and professional journeys. Our Vet Center will offer abundant scholarly and career-oriented resources that empower students to succeed and will offer a space for reprieve and refit. Our Focus Studio provides a space for cross-disciplinary creation, study, collaboration, and individualized support, as well as space for telehealth and other VA-related appointments.
Our strategic focus for Mil-Vet services and programming over the next several years will be in three main areas: Career Readiness, Holistic Wellness, and Honor & Celebration. To that end, we are building relationships with key partners on campus and in the military community. This spring and fall we will host several workshops and events with our Career Development Center as well as representatives from Veteran Affairs Multiservice, Counseling, and Community Engagement. We are still developing further programming for the '25-26 academic year but have a strong framework that we are building on every day. Veterans Awareness Week will remain a week of significant activity celebrating and honoring military service.
We invite you as partners of our office and members of our community to continue your partnership by attending upcoming events, sponsoring events like our 5K, donating to our Veteran’s Services Foundation Fund that supports Mil-Vet students directly, exploring job and internship programs for Mil-Vet students, or other opportunities that you identify.
My door is always open. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you’d like to link arms with us in supporting KU Mil-Vet students!

Honoring our Roots
Ms. Tania Brown-Berringer
Retired Director, Military and Veterans Services
In 2014, Ms. T set the foundations for what we now know as the Office of Military and Veterans Services. She has assisted in facilitating the academic and professional development for thousands of Military, Veteran, and Military-Affiliated students over the span of her career as the Director of Military and Veterans Services at Kutztown University.
Ms. T created a welcoming environment for all students to feel like they belong at KU—she gave them a platform to be heard, to be seen, and to feel accepted within this diverse community. Her outstanding efforts to support student success and wellness are the reason office events and operations were able to run efficiently for over a decade.
Through multiple military obligations, Ms. T remained focused and spent every free moment of her time bettering the services provided by our office. Despite different time zones, she managed to keep our office grounded and mission oriented—enduring sleepless nights to ensure that students received their education benefits and had an advocate in their corner.
On behalf of our office staff, students, and the Kutztown University community, we thank Retired Sergeant Major Tania Brown-Berringer for her continued dedication and commitment to advocacy for those who need it most.

A Banner Year For KUMVS
The fall semester was marked by significant growth and high-impact engagement for the KU Military & Veteran (Mil-Vet) community. We are thrilled to report a substantial increase in our ranks, welcoming 76 new military-connected students, including two promising ROTC cadets.
Our commitment to student success was evident during Veterans Awareness Week, where we hosted several high-impact events. These initiatives successfully celebrated, honored, and empowered our veteran students, focusing on crucial pillars of career readiness, entrepreneurship, and academic achievement.
As I conclude my first full year leading Military & Veteran Services, I remain deeply impressed by the enduring culture of military appreciation and goodwill demonstrated by my KU colleagues, the generosity of our alumni, and the remarkable resilience and work ethic of our students. We are building upon a strong foundation, and it has been my privilege to contribute to this legacy.
Veterans have profoundly shaped KU for decades, and their leadership continues to inspire our campus today.
We look forward to charting an ambitious course for Military & Veteran Services in 2026. Your continued partnership and support will be essential in making this next chapter a great leap forward for the KU Mil-Vet community. Sincerely, Nick Snyder, Director

9/11 Flags of Remembrance
Remembering Lives Lost and Those Brave Enough to Continue to Serve
September 11, 2025, marks Kutztown University’s second annual Flags of Remembrance Ceremony. 24 years since the day that time stood still. Flags of Remembrance placed within the Kutztown University Alumni Plaza represented the 2,977 lives tragically lost on September 11, 2001. We honor the bravery and sacrifice of the American heroes who ran headfirst into the chaos with hopes to save even one life--and we remind ourselves that freedom is not free. We were pleased to welcome several guest speakers who shared personal reflections--including our own director, Nick Snyder, Kutztown Mayor Jim Schlegel, Kutztown Police Chief Drezek, and PA Dept. of Veteran Affairs leader John Noll.
We Will Never Forget.
