Master of Education in Secondary Education

The Master of Education in Secondary Education Program at Kutztown University offers students six specializations for secondary school teachers and one program with initial certification:

  • Biology
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Curriculum & Instruction
  • Middle Level
  • Teaching (provides initial certification in the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, English, General Science, German, Mathematics, Physics, Physics/Math, Social Studies, and Spanish.  For more on this program, please see information and video below.)

These programs are designed to:

  • Increase awareness of the problems of education in their broad setting
  • Expand the knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and the instructional process
  • Augment professional awareness through research
  • Enhance scholarly growth and personal competency in one's specialized area

Program of Study

The Master of Education Degree in Secondary Education program consists of a minimum of 30 semester hours. An electronic portfolio is required prior to graduation. All courses are three semester hours, except the thesis (which is optional) or practice teaching fieldwork. Each of the specializations has four areas of study.

Biology, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Middle Level

  • Area I: Curriculum - designed to provide for scholarly growth in the respective discipline.
  • Area II: Educational Environment - designed to explore the fundamentals underlying the education process and to relate them to current practice in schooling.
  • Area III: Instruction - designed to investigate the criteria for decision-making and the structure and organization of curriculum and instruction.
  • Area IV: Professionalism - designed to pursue an understanding of how knowledge is gained, how to verify knowledge, and how to judge its value.

Curriculum & Instruction

The specialization in Curriculum & Instruction is designed for secondary school teachers in all academic disciplines and for other professionals concerned with the education of adolescents and/or adults. In addition to in-depth training in curriculum and instruction, this program offers graduate students the opportunity to pursue advanced study in a variety of academic disciplines. Graduate courses in this specialization are selected from four major areas:

  • Area I: Curriculum - designed to provide in-depth knowledge of instructional strategies and to enhance the effectiveness of instruction.
  • Area II: Educational Environment - designed to explore the fundamentals underlying the education process and to relate them to current practice in schooling.
  • Area III: Instruction - designed to investigate the criteria for decision-making and the structure and organization of curriculum and instruction.
  • Area IV: Professionalism - designed to pursue an understanding of how knowledge is gained, how to verify knowledge, and how to judge its value.

Master of Education in: Secondary Education with Initial Teaching Certification

The specialization in Teaching is designed to accelerate teacher certification for students who have already demonstrated content mastery. A student can earn a master's degree simultaneously with teaching certification. 

  • Area I: Educational Environment - designed to explore the fundamentals underlying the education process and to relate them to current practice in schooling. 
  • Area II: Instruction - designed to investigate the criteria for decision-making and the structure and organization of curriculum and instruction. 
  • Area III: Professionalism - designed to pursue an understanding of how knowledge is gained, how to verify knowledge, and how to judge its value.
  • Area IV: Curriculum - designed to provide in-depth knowledge of instructional strategies and to enhance the effectiveness of instruction.
