Certification Testing
PDE requires candidates to take and pass standardized testing to demonstrate proficiency in General Knowledge, Professional Knowledge and Subject Area Knowledge. The specific tests you need depend on the certification or endorsement area and grade band.

How do I become a teacher in Pennsylvania?
To become a certified teacher in Pennsylvania, you must:
- Hold at least a bachelor’s degree,
- Complete a state-approved educator preparation program (including student teaching),
- Pass required certification testing,
- Apply online through the Teacher Information Management System (TIMS)

What testing is required for Pa. teacher certification?
PA requires teacher candidates to take and pass standardized tests to show proficiency in General Knowledge, Professional Knowledge and Subject Area Knowledge. Earning qualifying (passing) scores on the tests is required for certification. Learn more about certification testing requirements.

Can I add-on certifications with testing only?
Yes. For current educators, many certification areas can be added-on by passing the standardized testing with no additional coursework required. Learn more about instructional add-on certification.

If I am certified for Grades PK-4, do I need additional testing to teach Grades 5-6?
Per Act 47 of 2025, those with Grades PK-4 certification can immediately teach Grades 5-6 without additional testing.

Is Pa. teacher certification transferable to other states?
Yes. PA and many other states and territories of the U.S. have reciprocity to recognize out-of-state teaching certificates, however, additional testing or fulfillment of other items may be required.

What is the best pathway to teaching for career changers?
The best pathway to certification for career changers depends on prior experience, degree goals, and ideal time-line for program completion.
A non-degree post-baccalaureate program is often the fastest route. Combined with Experience-Based Certification, career changers can work in a full-time paid teaching position while completing coursework towards Instructional I.

What scholarships and financial support is available for teacher candidates?
- Grow PA Scholarship Grant Program: Provides up to $5,000 to PA residents pursuing high-demand majors and careers.
- PA Student Teacher Support Program (STSP): Financial support of up to $10,000 during the student teaching semester.
- PA State Work-Study Program (SWSP): Student employment program that helps eligible students earn income while gaining work experience for a maximum award of $10,000.
- Federal TEACH Grant: Provides up to $4,000 per year for eligible students.
