Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology Track

B.S. in Biology

The Molecular Biology/Microbiology/Cell Biology Track at Kutztown University is designed to help students prepare for research and laboratory work in a variety of fields. In addition to seeking employment following graduation, many of our students who have completed this track have also gone on to earn master’s and/or doctoral degrees in Microbiology, Molecular and Cell biology and related fields. We pride ourselves on being a small program, so faculty in the department develop close relationships with students and strive to create a collegial and non-competitive atmosphere.

PROGRAM SERVICES

Obtaining employment following graduation or applying to graduate programs can seem overwhelming for students and often those who are nearing the completion of their program do not know where to begin in the process. We are here to provide you with information and assistance with academics, career planning, and preparation for the graduate school application process.  Please do not hesitate to ask for help because you do not need to do it alone.

If you have general questions about the Molecular, Micro, Cell program at Kutztown University, please email your questions to biology@kutztown.edu. Your inquiry will be forwarded to faculty within the Biology Department who teach courses within the Molecular, Micro, Cell track. Current students are encouraged to talk with faculty on campus.

Research in biology

The Department of Biology supports and encourages undergraduates to engage in research.  Faculty advisors work with students to develop, fund, and execute original research projects.  Often students present their research at regional or national professional meetings, and it is common for students to publish their work with faculty co-authors.  If you are interested in conducting research with a faculty member, you are encouraged to review the faculty research interests page and contact that individual directly.

GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICATION PROCESS

If you wish to go to graduate school, it is a good idea to start to plan as early as your Freshman year. By your Junior year, you should have achieved or made progress on achieving the following:

  • Maintain excellent grades
  • Continue to serve your university and/or community
  • Seek external letters of recommendation
  • Complete a research project and/or internship
  • Prepare your personal essay
  • Prepare for and take a standardized entrance exam (GRE)
  • Visit graduate schools to which you intend to apply
  • Prepare for graduate school interviews
