Break & Summer Housing Information

Throughout the year, there are scheduled periods when the residence halls close, and prior approval is required to remain on campus. During the academic year, residence halls close for Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring breaks. Summer housing is also available through a separate application and approval process. To remain on campus during any break or summer term, students must meet specific eligibility criteria.

Choose a break below for official dates, departure procedures, and stay request guidelines.

  • Thanksgiving Break Closing Information

Each year, Thanksgiving Break runs from 6:00 PM the Tuesday before Thanksgiving through 8:00 AM the Monday following Thanksgiving. Since the residence halls close during Thanksgiving Break, students must leave for break after their Tuesday classes are complete. Students with Tuesday evening classes are able to stay through 9:00 AM the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Students can return after 1:00 PM the Sunday following Thanksgiving.

Students may request to stay in their residence hall during Thanksgiving Break by completing the Thanksgiving Break Request in MyKUHousing. Students are only able to stay during Thanksgiving Break with approval from Residence Life, Housing, and Dining Services.

    1. All prohibited items such as microwaves and other kitchen appliances, candles, bed
risers, reed diffusers, etc., need to be removed from your space and taken home. If you
have any items that would be in violation of University Policy, they also should be
removed from your space as well. You can check the policies in The Key here ( link to
    Key).

    2. Unplug all electrical cords, including power strips, from electrical outlets.
Microfridges, Mini Fridges, and apartment kitchen refrigerators may remain plugged in
but must be plugged directly into the wall. (Apartment Kitchen refrigerators are already
plugged into the wall). If you choose to unplug your mini fridge or microfridge, please
discard any perishable items before you leave.

    3. Empty all waste baskets and bring the contents to the dumpsters around your
    residence hall.

    4. Close and lock all windows and pull up/open the blinds.

    5. Turn out all lights.

    6. Lock your door (do not rely on your roommate to do this!!)

    7. If you have a pet fish, provide it with a vacation feeder

    8. Move all clothes, papers, electrical wires, or other flammable items about 12 inches
(one floor tile) away from the heater/radiator.
