Professional Writing

Bachelor of Arts

What do Game of Thrones, The Avengers, TMZ, Yahoo, Yelp and every web site you visit including this page have in common? They all rely on professional writers for their creative storylines, scripts, informational copy and promotional content.

There is perhaps no more versatile degree than Professional Writing. During every waking hour of every day we’re surrounded by skillfully crafted language. Writers are behind the content and branding of all entertainment media. They work in every industry, government agency and influential institution. They write news, poetry, technical documents, podcasts, user manuals, games, novels, social media, screenplays, grants, reviews, media, analyses, and so much more.

You can be the author who writes the next chapter of your life and take your place beside those who use language, literature and creative expression to shape our world. KU’s Professional Writing program will challenge you to stretch your imagination as you hone your own craft, learning how to construct poignant stories, think critically and develop original creative content for fiction and nonfiction genres.

Professional Writing majors at Kutztown University begin their careers with WRI 100—Reading and Writing in the Professions, which galvanizes foundation skills in critical thinking and writing processes. They follow with core classes in creative writing, technical writing, journalism, and copy editing. Along the way, they pair electives in their primary areas of interest, like fiction, public rhetoric, or investigative reporting.

Professional writing coursework culminates in a directed internship. Supported by hands-on advisement, you’ll learn in professional situations where you’ll produce professional-grade writing in such real-world contexts as news outlets, literary enterprises, businesses. While interning you’ll be mentored by professional-writing faculty while you’re making valuable connections that can lead to employment opportunities.
