E‑Mobility Devices on Campus

Dear Kutztown University Students,

I hope this message finds you well. As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and accessible campus environment for all, I am writing to inform you of an important policy change regarding the use of e‑mobility devices.

After careful consideration and assessment of emerging safety concerns, Kutztown University will be prohibiting the use of all e‑mobility devices on campus, including electric scooters, electric bikes, and motorized skateboards. This decision has not been made lightly. It reflects increasing concerns about and incidents at KU with fire and life safety (i.e., exploding battery), in addition to pedestrian safety, congestion in high-traffic areas, and the potential for accidents and injuries involving both riders and those walking across campus.

Over the past year, institutions across the country have experienced a rise in incidents related to e‑mobility devices – particularly in shared spaces such as walkways, residence hall areas, and entrances to academic buildings. These devices, while convenient, can travel at speeds that create serious risks in environments designed primarily for foot traffic.

Effective immediately, the following will apply:

• Use of electric scooters, electric bikes, and motorized skateboards will not be permitted on university property, including walk/pathways and building interiors.
• Devices should not be stored inside university buildings, including residence halls, due to fire safety and battery concerns.
• Students who currently own these devices are expected to make alternative arrangements for transportation and storage off campus.
• Self-propelled wheelchairs and electric mobility devices specifically designed for and used by individuals with mobility-related disabilities are exempt from restrictions described herein.

We understand that this change may be an adjustment for some members of our community. Our goal is to prioritize the well-being of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors while ensuring that campus remains a safe, walkable environment.

As always, we encourage students to use non-motorized transportation options such as walking or traditional wheeled devices, in accordance with university policies.
