K.U. Modalities

There are now more ways to learn at Kutztown University! Courses offered in a variety of modalities help modern students select what works best for their unique style of learning.

In Person

Face to Face (F2F)

Face to Face courses are traditional courses offered in person with instructions occurring at a specific date, time and on- campus location.

Taisha enjoys taking 8 am classes and arrives on campus by 7:30 each morning. She likes knowing she can make friends on campus and take advantage of all the traditional school activities and serendipitous meetings with people.

Blended/Hybrid (BLND)

Blended/ Hybrid courses are offered primarily face-to-face but have at least 30% of instruction offered via distance education (i.e., 30% to 79% online).

Makayla wants to be in the classroom most of the time and appreciates that there are also opportunities for online learning in her classes.

Multi-Classroom Synchronous (MCS)

Multi-Classroom Synchronous is specifically defined for faculty to be able to use multiple classrooms at the same time to accommodate student activities.

Leslie has a sculpture course that is scheduled in multiple classrooms rooms at Kutztown University. When they have large projects it’s easy to expand beyond one classroom at the same time.

The following modalities present students within the same course with choices regarding their learning mode.

Hyflex (HYFL)

Hyflex courses are offered via two or more modalities, and students may choose modalities for each class period. (This was formerly coded MM multi modal)

Alex feels the dynamic environment created by faculty using a combination of online meetings, activities, and assignments keeps them interested in the quest for learning.

Simultaneous Modalities (SIM)

Simultaneous Modalities courses have sections that can be offered face to face, online synchronous, or online asynchronous, and still be the same course. This   is accomplished by cross-listing the sections. The number of seats offered per modality is determined by the faculty.

Jess wanted to go in person and meet everyone. Jamie wanted to study online at her own pace. Julie wanted online meetings. Fortunately, Professor Jennifer Jackson offers three sections of her class ‘Just Justice’ that will meet the learning styles of each student.
