Turning Your Military Service Into College Credits

Your military, training, education, and occupational experience may qualify you for academic credit at Kutztown University.  The Joint Services Transcript (JST) is the official academic record for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard service members and veterans.  The JST documents the military coursework, occupational training, and American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendations that Kutztown University can evaluate for possible transfer credits.

How the JST Process Works

Step 1: Request Your JST

Note: Air Force and Space Force Students typically submit transcripts through the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF), not the JST.

2. Log in using your CAC, DS Logon, or approved credentials.
3. Select “Official Transcript Request”
4. Search for Kutztown University as the receiving institution.
5. Submit your transcript electronically

What Happens Next?

After your official Joint Service  transcript is received:

If you are currently or previously served in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force, your military education and technical training may qualify you for academic credit at Kutztown University. The Community College of the Air Force (CCAF), maintains the official academic record for Air Force and Space Force personnel and awards college credit for military training, technical schools, and completed coursework. How many credits will I receive?

The number of credits you receive depends on your individual Joint Services Transcript (JST) or Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript, your military training and experience, and how those credits apply to your chosen degree program at Kutztown University.  KU evaluates official military transcripts for possible academic credit, and qualifying military education and training may transfer as general education requirements, university electives, or—in some cases—course credit related to your major.  The number of credits awarded can vary based on your military occupation, training, rank, classification, and academic program.

Before submitting your transcript, you can explore Kutztown University’s Military Credit Equivalencies Chart to see a selection of military courses, training, and classifications that have already been evaluated for KU academic credit.  Keep in mind that the chart is a helpful reference, but your official transcript evaluation will determine the credits awarded to you.  Some military training may also be reviewed further if it aligns with your chosen major but is not currently listed on the chart.

The best first step: Submit your official CCAF transcript if you are an Air Force or Space Force student, or your official Joint Services Transcript (JST) if you served in another eligible branch, to Kutztown University for an official evaluation.  Only official transcripts can be evaluated for academic credit.

How quickly can I graduate?

That depends on how many credits transfer and how those credits fit into your degree requirements.  Every credit that applies toward your program could reduce the number of courses you need to complete.  However, students must still meet KU degree requirements, including the university’s residency requirements.

Once your transcript has been evaluated, you can work with your academic advisor and KU’s Military and Veterans Services team to better understand your remaining requirements and create a path toward graduation.

How much money can I save?

Transferring applicable military credits may help you save money by reducing the number of KU courses you need to take to complete your degree.  The actual amount you save depends on how many credits are awarded, whether they apply to your degree requirements, your enrollment status, and your tuition and financial aid situation.

In short: The more applicable credits you bring with you, the more time—and potentially tuition costs—you may save.
