CLAS Student Success

Hello, current and future KU students,

I’m Maddie Anthes, the Assistant Dean here in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). In CLAS, we want all students to succeed, and it’s my job to work with students to make sure they cross the finish line and graduate.

Isn’t it everyone’s job to make sure students succeed? Yes! I work closely with your faculty, advisor, success navigator, and several other offices and resources across campus to make sure you have all the support you need while in college. I coordinate that support to ensure you get the right kind of help at the right time.

Wondering what “Student Success” means? Click below to learn more.

  • What is Student Success?

There is no one definition of “Student Success,” but our College defines it as “the intentional process of creating access, providing resources and support, and celebrating student achievement.” Our goals are to welcome you, support your progress at KU, and ultimately watch you graduate!

    1. Access: We want to make sure students of all abilities and backgrounds have access to our College’s majors and courses. With special focus on the first year, we want to make sure all students can succeed once they arrive at KU.
    2. Support: Our College works in a network of student supports (including faculty advisors, instructors, Navigators, the Student Assistance Office, housing, and more) to make sure students get the right kind of help at the right time. We’re intentional in our interventions, working together to provide support along the way.
    3. Celebration: Our goal is to get you to graduation. Along the way, we love to find ways to celebrate your accomplishments. This means honoring you at our Dean’s Scholars Reception, recommending you for awards, or connecting you to opportunities to expand on your strengths.
  • How does CLAS help students?

I work closely with the Student Success network (all the people and services offered to support students) on campus to guide and support students.  One way we do this is through our platform, Starfish, where we can track students’ progress in courses; if a student is struggling, faculty or advisors can enter a “flag” or referral for intervention. This platform allows the Success network to collaborate on the intervention process and reach out to students in an intentional way.

I also act as a student advocate when students need help navigating some of the processes and procedures in college.   This may take the form of one-on-one meetings when a student is struggling, discussions of grade appeals or how to communicate with faculty, or a drop-in session to go over campus resources. Each student’s needs are different, and I’m always available to discuss what you need.

  • How can I get help?

It depends what kind of help you need!  If you need help with….

    • Course content – Try going to your professor’s consultation hours as a first stop, and reinforce the content with Tutoring.
    • Picking classes, discussing an internship, or considering a career – Talk to your advisor! They’re there throughout your entire semester (not just at registration time!) to help you create an academic path.
    • Finances – Contact the Office of Financial Aid for questions about your financial aid package, and Office of Student Accounts for questions about your bill.
    • Navigating college, especially in your first year – Your Navigator (listed in Starfish) is a great place to start.
    • Getting accommodations – Disability Services Office (DSO) can help you get set up with your course accommodations.
    • Your roommate or housing assignment – chat with your RA or contact Residence Life, Housing, and Dining Services for help.
    • A grade appeal – I’ll help you navigate the grade appeal process (along with your professor and department chair).
