Contemporary Trends in Documentary Animation

The "Faculty First Thursday Presentation" will be held 11-11:50 a.m. for presentations and 11:50 a.m. to noon for Q&A Thursday, March 7, 120 Sharadin Arts Building. Jacob Rivkin, assistant professor, Art and Design, will present "Contemporary Trends in Documentary Animation." Documentary films often turn to talking head interviews or panning over photographs when bridging gaps in the archival record. However, animation as a medium, either within nonfiction films or as complete documentary projects, has the potential to weave together connections between the past and the present, directly and metaphorically, in more varied and creative ways. This presentation will explore how animation can be an essential aspect of storytelling in documentary narratives. From implementing techniques like colorfully designed characters, to mind-bending transitions between ideas, to experimental renderings and analog drawings, using animation in contemporary documentaries provides novel approaches to truth-telling. This free presentation is open to the entire university community and is presented by the Dean’s Office, College of Visual and Performing Arts. We look forward to seeing you there.

Teaching writing intersects in many ways with power. What are the acceptable forms, formats and phrases? In what contexts? Using the Conference on College Composition and Communication’s “This Ain’t Another Statement! This Is A DEMAND for Black Linguistic Justice” as a starting point, we’ll discuss how professors might address language, correctness and power in their classrooms 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 6 Rohrbach Library and Zoom.
