Kutztown University Launches Certificate in Biotechnology
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University has launched a new certificate program in biotechnology. Developed in collaboration between the Biological Sciences and the Physical Sciences departments, the program is designed to develop and enhance practical workplace skills for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
Biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries are well-established and growing in southeastern Pennsylvania. Philadelphia ranks among the top 10 metropolitan areas in the U.S. for employment in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, equipment, research, testing, and medical laboratories. In the Lehigh Valley, more than 170 life science-related businesses are currently operating.
The program offers real-world training through hands-on learning. Each course, developed specifically for this program, gives students direct access to advanced instrumentation and standard industry techniques. Students gain valuable experience by completing exercises and applications that mirror the practices professionals use every day in the biotechnology field.
Courses are laboratory-intensive and emphasize mastering skills in advanced techniques for analyzing cells, proteins and DNA using state-of-the-art equipment. The program is designed to equip students with technical skills and industry knowledge that enhance their ability to succeed in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, while helping to meet the workforce needs of Pennsylvania’s growing life science sector.
