Loriann Irving Named KU Employee of the Month for August 2026

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Congratulations to Loriann Irving, instructor, Student Support Services Program, on being named Kutztown University Employee of the Month for August 2026.

Irving's nomination came from several individuals, which can be read below.

"I am proud to nominate my supervisor for Employee of the Month for her exceptional leadership, professionalism and commitment to student success, which she consistently demonstrates in her role as the director of TRIO Student Support Services.

Her leadership has been especially evident during a challenging period for our program. TRIO SSS serves first-generation college students, students from limited-income backgrounds and students with disabilities. Leading a federally funded grant requires navigating funding and governmental uncertainty while continuing to meet grant requirements and provide consistent, high-quality support to students. Most recently, our office has also operated without secretarial support, creating additional demands for the entire team. Through these challenges, she continues to lead with poise, patience, integrity and a solution-oriented approach.

One of her greatest strengths is her willingness to listen. She welcomes ideas and feedback from professional staff and student employees, values diverse perspectives and remains open to new approaches that can improve how we serve students. She encourages collaboration rather than simply directing it and works diligently to make decisions based on what will best support our students and program.

That collaborative spirit extends beyond TRIO SSSP. She readily assists our sister TRIO program, Upward Bound, whenever called upon. Although Upward Bound serves high school students, it faces many of the same challenges as federally funded TRIO programs. She has also worked collaboratively with TRIO staff and graduate assistants to create our newly established TRIO Career Community, engaging campus partners to strengthen career development opportunities and resources for students.

Her leadership is informed by more than 20 years of service to Kutztown University, including over a decade leading TRIO SSSP as the director. Students trust her, staff value her leadership and colleagues appreciate her collaborative approach. Regardless of the challenge, she remains focused on doing what is best for students. She exemplifies the professionalism, service, collaboration, positive attitude and dedication to student success that the Employee of the Month award is intended to recognize."

"I would like to nominate Professor Loriann Irving for Employee of the Month in recognition of her outstanding dedication to supporting first-generation and low-income students at Kutztown University within the TRIO SSSP. She consistently demonstrates professionalism, enthusiasm and a genuine commitment to helping students succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.

Professor Irving makes a vital contribution to the success of our students by understanding that academic success is not one-size-fits-all. She takes the time to work with students individually, helping them select courses and develop schedules that are realistic and supportive of their academic, personal and financial needs. Her approach recognizes the unique challenges that first-generation and low-income students may face and ensures that students feel supported rather than having to navigate those challenges alone.

In addition to her direct work with students, Professor Irving actively creates opportunities that promote both academic and personal success. She plans and supports events that connect students with resources, builds community and encourages them to remain engaged with their education. Her efforts demonstrate that student success extends beyond the classroom and that creating a sense of belonging and connection is an important part of helping students persist and achieve their goals.

Professor Irving's work strongly reflects Kutztown University's commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities that empower students in their intellectual, social, civic and career endeavors. Through her advocacy, accessibility and intentional support of students who may experience additional barriers to higher education, she helps create the caring and supportive community envisioned by the university. Her dedication to student success makes a meaningful contribution not only to the students she serves, but also to the broader goals and mission of Kutztown University.

For these reasons, I believe Professor Irving is highly deserving of recognition as Employee of the Month. Her professionalism, dedication and student-centered approach exemplify the kind of employee who makes a lasting difference in the university community."

Nominations are collected from students, faculty and staff, and the Employee of the Month is selected by the Human Resources Advisory Council. A winner will be selected each month, and out of the 12 monthly winners one will be selected as Employee of the Year. The Employee of the Month will receive a plaque, reserved parking and a monetary gift.
