CAEP Accreditation & Special Program Approval

Below, find KU programs that are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Initial level programs are those leading to an Instructional I teacher education license. Advanced programs refer to graduate programs that lead to a recommendation for licensure to PDE. The table also lists whether the program has Speciality Program Approval (SPA), and the SPA submission and most recent recognition are provided.

Policy

Clearances (background checks)

At KU, "clearances" refer collectively to Acts 34, 114 and 151 background checks; Mandated Reporter Training; and TB testing. Clearances are required by PDE for entering PK-12 public school buildings and are a pre-requisite for courses that include school visitations in coursework. A student's MyKU account is blocked from enrolling in courses with fieldword until all clearances have been submitted and approved. These items must be obtained using the specifications for educator clearances mandated by PDE.

For undergraduate students, clearances cannot be dated earlier than 4 months before entering a certification program. Clearance renewal is required for student teaching. Requirements for graduate initial certification, student affairs, and counselor education differ based on program length and fieldwork type. See a program's webpage for details. Professional Dispositions
The purpose of the Disposition Policy is to promote and assure teacher candidate professionalism aligned to national standards. This policy applies to all programs and candidates in programs leading to recommendation to PDE for licensure. See COE's Teacher Education Dispositions Policy here.
