Student Success and Academic Excellence Unit Changes

With the upcoming retirement of Dr. Andrea Kirshman, after her many years of dedicated excellence in serving the students of KU, we are engaging in a structural reorganization of the unit that has been Student Success and Academic Excellence.

Beginning in July, the unit will be divided into two departments: the current Department of Academic Advising and Student Development and a new Office of Student Success and Excellence.

The Department of Academic Advising and Student Development will have responsibility for direction of the Exploratory Studies and General Studies programs, co-lead the STARS program and be a support home for faculty directing Honors, Act 101, TRIO-SSSP, TRIO Upward Bound and the FDI program. That department will continue to be chaired by Dr. Steve Lem.

The Office of Student Success and Academic Excellence will have as its program areas of Tutoring, the Academic Recovery Programs, Success Navigation, co-leadership of the STARS program and management of the Starfish platform for early warning. We welcome Dr. R. Chad Brown back to campus as the director for that office.

For purposes of reporting, evaluation and organizational structure, both units will sit within the College of Education, reporting to Dean Rebecca West Burns. However, the dedicated faculty and staff will continue to serve the needs of all undergraduate students across the university. Their offices will continue to be located on the ground floor of Rohrbach Library.

We hope that the connection with the College of Education will provide opportunities for potential collaborative research and engagement. Questions regarding the new structure can be directed to the Office of the Provost, Dr. Lem or Dr. Brown.
