KU in the News: Students, Faculty Film Movie in Eckley Miners' Village

Kutztown University students, faculty and staff traveled to Eckley Miners' Village in Weatherly, Pa. Friday, Oct. 24, to film a movie in the historic coal-mining town. Led by the Department of Communication Studies and professor Dr. Deryl Johnson, in collaboration with the Department of Cinema, Television and Media Production, nearly 50 extras consisting of KU students, faculty and staff spent the day filming in advance of the projected release date of September 2026. Pictures of Loved Ones for Dia de los Muertos Offrenda (Altar)

The Multicultural Center will be setting up an offrenda (altar) for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, Starbucks, MSU. On Dia de los Muertos, offerings or "offrendas" are often given and a table is set up that can include a loved one's favorite food and their picture. If you'd like, please feel free to email a copy of a picture of a loved one to mishra@kutztown.edu by Wednesday, Oct. 29, that we will print out in black and white to include on the altar. We will also have tea lights to light for those who have passed on.

First Step – Your Path to Business Ownership

The Kutztown University Small Business Development Center (SBDC), in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Pennsylvania Business One Stop Shop and Quaint Oak Bank, invites aspiring entrepreneurs to virtually attend “First Step – Your Path to Business Ownership,” noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3. Register online. This free, live online workshop will guide participants through the essential steps of starting a business in Pennsylvania. Attendees will gain practical insights into business planning, financing, marketing, legal structure and compliance requirements. Presenters will also introduce no-cost resources and expert consulting available through the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (PASBDC) network to help entrepreneurs start, manage and grow successful businesses. Whether you are exploring a business idea or preparing to launch, this session provides the foundational knowledge and expert guidance needed to take your first step toward business ownership with confidence. Those who should attend include entrepreneurs, innovators and individuals across Pennsylvania interested in starting or formalizing a business; early-stage founders preparing to launch; and anyone seeking trusted, no-cost startup assistance from the KU SBDC – recognized statewide as a leading resource for business startup education, strategic planning and small business growth. Experts will join from the KU SBDC, U.S. SBA, Pennsylvania Business One Stop Shop and Quaint Oak Bank (an SBA-approved lender offering guidance on financial readiness for new business owners). Saidi to Host Fall 2025 Chambliss Faculty Lecture Nov. 4

Kutztown University is proud to host an engaging and interactive lecture by Dr. Christine Saidi, professor of African and World History, for Kutztown University’s Fall 2025 Chambliss Faculty Lecture 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 183 McFarland Student Union. In addition to the in-person event, this year's Chambliss lecture will be available as a webinar on Zoom. All are welcome to attend.

Digital Accessibility Training

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving accessibility across Kutztown University, we are excited to announce a new accessibility enhancement to D2L: Panorama is now live. Panorama is designed to support inclusive learning by generating accessibility reports for all documents and announcements in D2L, looking for ways to improve accessibility. Faculty and support staff can also access DocHub, a standalone tool with similar functionality, by logging into Yuja Panorama or navigating to Information Technology's webpage on Accessibility and Assistive Technology. Hybrid training sessions will be available for Panorama/D2L users and DocHub users. Join in person at 200 Stratton or via Zoom (registration links below). Webinars will be recorded and available on-demand. Documentation is available on IT Solutions. No. 1 Field Hockey Clinches Top Seed, to Host PSAC Final Four Nov. 7-9

The Golden Bear field hockey team improved to 17-0 over the weekend, a new program record for both the best start and longest win streak in a single season. KU, ranked No. 1 in Division II, has clinched the top seed in this year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament and will host the PSAC Final Four Nov. 7-9 at Andre Reed Stadium. KU's regular-season finale is against No. 2 Shippensburg, 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, Andre Reed Stadium.

Perta Earns PSAC East Special Teams Athlete of the Week

Zach Perta made an impact on special teams and defense as No. 4 Kutztown football defeated West Chester 41-7 Saturday, Oct. 25. With his successful day on the gridiron, Perta earned this week's PSAC East Special Teams Athlete of the Week. Perta blocked his first career punt in the final minute of the first quarter. Teammate Justin Gonzalez picked it up and returned it for a touchdown to put the Bears up 21-0. KU would block another punt later in the game, giving them two blocked punts in a game for the second time this season.
