Ed House at Deatrick Hall Welcomes its First Cohort of Future Educators

The College of Education proudly welcomed its inaugural cohort of first-year students into the newly launched Ed House at Deatrick Hall, Kutztown University's special interest housing for aspiring educators, Thursday, Aug. 21. This milestone marks a significant step in fostering community, connection and purpose among our future teachers. Faculty advisors Dr. Jen Gehringer and Dr. Michele White, both recognized for their deep commitment to student-centered learning, were on hand to greet students and families, decorate doors and ensure a warm and thoughtful welcome. Their presence and care exemplify the college's guiding ethic, students first. One of the students featured during move-in is a member of our Class of 2025 Early College Academy and has officially committed to KU. Her mother, a mentor teacher in one of our partner districts, joined in the celebration, highlighting the powerful intergenerational connections that define our educator community. This launch is more than a housing initiative; it's a living example of how our faculty and staff are building spaces of belonging and support for students from day one. Welcome to KU, Ed House Golden Bears.

Updates to Student Support Initiatives

Beginning Fall 2025, Kutztown University will launch two restructured student support initiatives to better align names with purpose and improve clarity across campus. The team formally known as the KU Behavioral Intervention Team (KUBIT) will transition to the Kutztown University KARE Team, an acronym reflecting a Kindhearted and knowledgeable, Action-oriented approach to Review and respond to Elevated student concerns. This change represents a shift toward a more comprehensive, proactive and personalized intervention, centered on early response, cross-campus collaboration and holistic support. The KARE Team now addresses a broader scope of student needs, including behavioral, academic, emotional and personal concerns. Referrals will continue to be made through the Student of Concern Referral Form. Additionally, the team formally known as the KU Care Team has evolved to the Student Financial Emergency Support and Resource Team, clearly reflecting its role in assisting students experiencing unexpected financial hardship. Students can submit requests using the Emergency Funding Request Form.
