College of Education Hosts Senior Orientation for 350+ Student Teachers
The College of Education recently held its annual Senior Orientation, preparing more than 350 students for their upcoming student teaching placements during the 2025-26 academic year. Led by Dr. Tracy Driehaus, assistant dean for Clinical Education and Partnerships, the event exemplified the college's commitment to its guiding motto, students first. The orientation featured a dynamic panel of district representatives from KU's partner schools, offering invaluable advice and guidance to future educators. In addition, the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) provided professional training to support students as they enter the classroom. Faculty engagement was a cornerstone of the event. Dr. Andy Miness, Secondary Education, and Dr. Meg Norris, Elementary PreK–4 Education, led an interactive activity designed to help students set intentions and goals for the year ahead. Their leadership, along with the presence of district partners, reflects the college's deep connection to local schools and its unwavering dedication to preparing students for success. This orientation is more than a kickoff; it's a powerful demonstration of how KU faculty embody an ethic of care and collaboration, ensuring our future educators are supported every step of the way.

New CEL Journal Post
Welcome back! For our first journal article of the 2025-26 academic year, CEL Faculty Director Erin Kraal shares selections from her summer reading list. First up: A Pedagogy of Kindness by Catherine Denial. This book is a good pick for faculty who:
- are feeling burned out;
- are new or early in their careers;
- enjoy personal stories;
- are finding students unmotivated, disengaged or disinterested;
- want practical tips across a wide range of topics and approaches;
- dislike dense pedagogy “research” books;
- prefer shorter reads.
The book strikes a balance between practical advice and Denial's personal narrative as she takes us through her journey toward a pedagogy of kindness, sharing powerful moments of her own “unkindness” that illuminate her growth.
